An Incident in Professional Life~ Tapash Kumar Home
Many of us have known about Bollywood films like "Bombay to Goa", "The Burning Train", "Chennai Express" entertained movie watchers mainly films based on train or bus journey.
But, here I am mentioning a true and unpleasant journey incident on a Delhi bound train from Chennai in the year 1999 by 60 students group.I was working as a 'Chief Information & Protocol Officer"(year-1997-2008) in a premier institute under the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India -NIFT. I was mainly responsible for the overall image of the institute which includes the welfare of students and faculty members besides other responsible assignments. NIFT had 6 Centers in India. Around 1000 students we expected from all Centers and arrangements were done for their stay in a single economical hotel i.e. Ashok Yatri Niwas (now it is converted to a pvt. 5 star hotel) in Central Delhi for their participation in students festival for 3 days in the month of Nov'99.
The group of 60 students mainly girls with two faculty members came across a few miscreants, goons on the train and created disturbances, accusing, abusing them while the train was reaching around mid-night towards Itarsi station in Madhya Pradesh. Fearing more trouble, one of the faculty got down at Itarsi station to lodge a complaint at the station and called up our Director General (Sr. IAS Officer) Shri L.V. Saptharishi over the phone at New Delhi and briefed him about the incident. The complaint was formally lodged at the station but it remained uncertain any action by the Railway authorities.
However, our DG called me up and briefed me about the incident and advised me to take best necessary action. I assured him not to worry and planned my action accordingly from my residence with the landline and Telephone Directory. It may be mentioned here that during the year 1999 we were lacking modern technology like mobile phone or such digital instruments. So, I started calling up emergency desk/night duty officials of Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India. Introducing myself over the phone and explaining the situation over running train to a few officials. In consideration to my explanation, one official had consented to send a wireless message to Bhopal Railway Station as the train was about to reach there to provide necessary RPF security to the particular coach where students (mostly girls students) were travelling. Of course, I could not verify the posting of security deployment from the faculty or students due to the absence of mobile phone during those years.
Anyhow, after completion of this couple of hours task I informed my DG in the very early hours of the morning of the development. He requested me that since you have taken pain to do so much for the safe travel of the students it would be very nice if you see them at New Delhi Railway Station and also to know about their journey experience on the train especially between Bhopal to New Delhi.
I gladly accepted his advice and reached New Delhi Railway Station as per schedule arrival of the train.
Surprisingly, when the train arrived I could not see any of our students or faculty on the said coach.

When I asked a young boy who got down from the same coach he briefed me that all of your students got down at Nizamuddin Station which was convenient for them. Further, he confirmed to me that they were provided RPF security from Bhopal Station and reached safely.
I returned from the New Delhi Railway Station with a sigh of relief that students are safe and my effort was successful.
Later on, I met the students and faculty in our institute.
I would like to conclude this incident that it is a lesson to learn about determination, will power, integrity, sincerity, helping attitude, feelings for others in trouble or distress, presence of mind, overcome obstacles, concentration, acceptance of challenge and fight for justice.
After all, it also inspired and boosts up my energy like many other happenings in life when I got the work done successfully.
